Odors in the air you breathe can indicate the presence of mold, bacteria, VOC’s or other gases that adversely affect your health, including contaminates that trigger asthma and allergy symptoms.  Air Allergen & Mold Testing can test for these irritants using a variety of sampling methods. 

The most common cause of odors in homes is mold, yet neither mold nor mold spores smell.  The smell normally associated with mold is from gases given off when mold metabolizes the materials it is growing on.  Therefore, when an odor associated with mold is detected, it usually indicates that mold is growing somewhere nearby. 

Mold growth increases with increased humidity.  That is why the odor seems to be more noticeable when it is rainy or humid. The odor can vary from sweet to pungent, depending on the type of mold, the material it is growing on, and the growing conditions.

Since gases, such as those causing odors from mold, can pass through many materials, it is possible to have odors from mold growing behind walls or other unseen areas.  Air Allergen & Mold Testing has a variety of ways to identify what cannot be seen, including the taking of air samples behind walls to determine the type of mold and airborne spore count.  Mold type and airborne spore counts offer clues to the cause of the mold growth and can be vital to determining how much remediation is necessary without unnecessary expense.  

Air Allergen and Mold Testing can also sample the air for many other odor causing airborne contaminates such as VOC’s, including those regulated by the EPA.  Sampling for methane, formaldehyde, respirable particulates and a large number of gases, including those without odor such as Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide, are also available for commercial and industrial customers.
