Further evidence has arisen to support the dangers children face when they are exposed to a wide range of chemicals in the air. An alliance of scientists confirms that developmental growth in children may be triggered by air pollutants, among other causes. This has resulted in the coalition publicly announcing its findings in a published report titled Project TENDR (Targeting Environmental NeuroDevelopmental Risks).

It is imperative to rapidly take measures to ensure our children are healthy and that their growth is not negatively impacted, leading to near and long term issues.

Chemicals in the air, water, foods, and household products we intake daily are major causes for concern. The average American spends between 80 to 90 percent of their time indoors. However, most of us never think of what’s actually floating in the air that we breathe day in and day out. These toxic chemicals are invisible, making them easy to forget, but they are always lurking if nothing is done to mitigate them. Project TENDR has singled out specific pesticides, flame retardants, lead, phthalates, and combustion-related air pollutants.

AirMD provides environmental consulting services and offers a Residential Evaluation to assess the overall condition of your indoor home environment. Testing can include measuring moisture levels, airborne particles, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), and much more. Our Residential Evaluation is a comprehensive first step toward creating a cleaner healthier home for your family.  Upon completion of the analysis, AirMD’s team of scientists and experts will issue a written report enclosed with the test findings and recommendations on the effective methods to take to make sure your indoor quality environment is an ideal one for your children to thrive and be healthy. It’s time for us all to be INFORMED and PROACTIVE.

The health and well-being of your family is the highest priority and there could be an invisible danger infiltrating your home  posing health problems. Indoor air pollution is a common yet often unidentified problem that leads to numerous health issues every year. Below are some common sources of indoor air pollution you should be aware of.

New Carpets

Most people think new carpet could not impact air quality. After all, they’re new! However, what they fail to realize is that new carpets often release volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) into the air. If you’re preparing to install carpet buy low-VOC products free of formaldehyde adhesives. Furthermore, keep your windows open and encourage ventilation after it’s installation.

Moisture

If you notice a leak or other water intrusion, it’s crucial to act quickly to find the problem. The likelihood for development of mold is increased when water conditions are present. Some of the health issues mold can cause include:

  • Nasal and sinus congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Throat irritation
  • Respiratory infections

Asbestos

Prior to 1975, many building materials contained asbestos. However, asbestos was found to cause adverse health conditions including mesothelioma and lung cancer. During home redecoration or renovation, these materials can be disturbed and release asbestos particles into the air in your home. Some things in your home that may contain asbestos include:

  • Ceiling and floor tiles
  • Insulation
  • Shingles

Just because a home was built after 1975 does not mean asbestos may not be a problem because asbestos can still be found in many building products currently imported into the United States. Additionally, federal regulations require prior to demolition or re-construction of any multifamily swelling or commercial property including retail or office that a current asbestos survey be performed regardless of construction dates and failure to do so risks serious penalties.

Assurance You Can Count On
It’s up to you to ensure the health and well-being of your loved ones, and the quality of the air in your home is something you shouldn’t overlook. Knowledge is key, and being aware of these common sources of indoor air pollution puts the power in your hands.

If you suspect the quality of your indoor air may be compromised, the only way to ensure your safety is to have an indoor air quality evaluation performed by the professional staff at AirMD.
