As the energy crisis gripped the nation and energy prices soared, businesses looked for ways to save money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, some of the steps taken to reduce energy consumption had unexpected consequences. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/men\/features\/sick-building-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WebMD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cIn the 1970s, there was a movement amongst builders and regulatory authorities to button-up buildings to save on fuels for heating and air conditioning. Many buildings became virtually air-tight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heating and air conditioning bills went down, but so too did the quality of the air in these buttoned-up buildings giving rise to what has commonly been dubbed \u201cSick-Building Syndrome.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Indoor Air Pollution<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to WebMD, which drew of information provided by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, factors contributing to the pollution of the air circulating in such facilities include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoor combustion (heaters, ranges,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/smoking-cessation\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/men\/features\/sick-building-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon monoxide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0buildup <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volatile organic compounds (AirMD provides <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testing for these VOCs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ) such as benzene, styrene, and other solvents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airborne-allergens and pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, spores, and protozoans. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New building materials (plywood, carpet glue) and fabrics (rugs, furniture) that &#8220;offgas&#8221; toxic fumes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control adds to that list. \u201cIndoor environments are highly complex and building occupants may be exposed to a variety of contaminants,\u201d they say.
